A TERMINALLY-ILL man has hit out at the lack of protection he received when working with asbestos almost 50 years ago.

Grandfather-of-two Peter Smith (71), from Grotton, who is suffering from the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma, has spoken of his anger that no “special precautions” were made when he was exposed

The former electrician enjoyed good health until his symptoms began at the end of last year. This April his world was rocked when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment

Peter said: “I feel very angry and hurt that my employers did not take any steps to protect me.”

Peter is now preparing proceedings against two Manchester companies he worked for in the 1960s and 1970s.

Law firm Irwin Mitchell. representing the Saddleworth victim, is marking today’s Action Mesothelioma Day by urging the Government to do more to rid the UK’s public buildings of the deadly dust today.
