INSPIRATIONAL... Thomas Harrison receives the Year 11 Special Award from with head teacher Sarah Calvert
Caring pupils in charity bonanza
GENEROUS pupils at Crompton House School have raised a whopping £15,000 for charity this year.
Students collected the money through a variety of events, from sponsored head shaves to cake sales.
Their most poignant donation was a £3,646 cheque to the Young Oncology Unit at The Christie in Manchester to honour Year 11 pupil Thomas Harrison. Thomas was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma — a form of cancer — last November, and pupils were quick to offer support.
Head teacher Sarah Calvert said: “ ”Thomas’s friends were inspired by the way Thomas remained cheerful and attended school whenever he could — and Thomas was inspired by the support and friendship he felt.”
When the current Year 11 pupils left the school on May 31, Thomas was presented with the Year 11 Special Award to recognise his positive attitude and courage.
Thomas’s parents, Jill and Andrew Harrison, and his younger sister Rebecca, a Year 8 pupil at Crompton House, were present to see him receive the award.
They wrote to the school saying: “Thomas was inspired by the way everyone else around him took on the challenge The fundraising total for the Young Oncology Unit at The Christie far exceeded our hopes.”
Over the last school year, pupils have also raised money for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, Banardos, Kampala Children’s Centre in Uganda, The Samaritans, KASUPE in Malawi, Shelterbox, Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Springhill Hospice and Save The Children.
