HITTING the right note: Kieran McMahon with fellow folk musicians at the Waggon Inn
MUSIC fan 14-year-old Kieran McMahon has single-handedly organised a Saddleworth folk festival
The teenager staged the “Three Days of Folk” festival at Uppermill’s Waggon Inn following the cancellation of the popular Saddleworth Folk Festival.
He advertised on Facebook, YouTube and in folk clubs and attracted a range of players for the event, which went on until the early hours on Friday and Saturday.
But the Saddleworth School pupil couldn’t stay to the end on Sunday — he had to get up for lessons the next morning!
Kieran, who plays the guitar and mandolin, has already appeared at Manchester Academy, and organised a concert at Friezland church hall last year with step brothers Andrew and Jonathan Bergin that raised £900 for charity.
Dad Ian said: “I am so proud of him. I have told him he could make this his event from now on.”
The full festival was cancelled last year for two years, due to the expected closure of Churchill Playing Fields. It regularly attracted well-known folk musicians.
