MAKING a mark . . . North-West in Bloom judges John Shepley and Brian Whalley check out Oldham’s WOW floral display in High Street
OLDHAM town centre’s floral displays certainly have the WOW factor — but is it enough to impress North-West in Bloom judges?
Assessors arrived in the borough on Monday to check out the jewel in the crown of this year’s Bloom and Grow entry, the WOW display, outside Spindles and Town Square Shopping Centre.
Designed to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the Olympics, Oldham Council’s green space manager Glen Dale said the borough is hoping to repeat last year’s gold standard award.
“I think we’ve done extremely well. We can’t better last year’s result but I’m hoping our efforts have surpassed last year’s,” said Glen.
Last year’s victory was a golden ticket to enter the national contest after they beat Chester and Preston in the Best City category, which is based on the size of the electoral roll.
The North-West winners will be announced on October 25.
In the Britain in Bloom contest, Oldham is competing against Northampton, Norwich, Aberdeen and Westminster, and the result will be revealed on October 6.
