Jobless total falls for a fourth time
Date published: 20 July 2012
UNEMPLOYMENT in Oldham has fallen for the fourth successive month.
There were 7,747 people out of work in the borough last month, a reduction of 164 since May.
The last time the figure rose was in February, when the effects of short-term Christmas working came out of the system.
Since that spike – at 8,234 — the Oldham economy has absorbed 487 full-time jobs for those previously on the jobless register.
The only sour note is that the number of women looking for work rose last month, though by only 17.
The total number of jobless men fell by 181, the lowest figure of the calendar year — though the figures compare poorly with this time last year when there were 698 more people in work in Oldham than today.
Nationally, unemployment has fallen for the fourth month in a row and more jobs are being created, especially for people over the age of 65.
