Doomed workers snub strike

Oldham workers at their doomed Remploy factory yesterday ignored calls for a national strike, instead showing they have given up hope of salvaging their jobs.
Despite 60 per cent of factories across the country cooperating with the strike initiated by GMB and Unite unions to oppose the company’s forced closure, every member of the Oldham team went to work.
Ten Remploy sites reported that all employees reported for work, and at least 50 per cent of employees attended work at a further 14 sites.
A local Remploy spokesman said: “Not one of the workers at the Oldham factory went on strike. They had no intention of losing pay. They are very disillusioned with the GMB Union.
“The majority are actively searching for new employment and do not want to be viewed as trouble makers.”
A national Remploy spokesman said: “Significant numbers of employees turned up to work as normal and the company thanks them for their commitment.”
