Theatre champion loses fight for life

FORMER Oldham Coliseum artistic director Patrick “Paddy” Masefield has lost his battle with cancer.
The 69-year-old grandfather-of-three spent a controversial two-month stint at the Fairbottom Street theatre in 1974.
After leaving he became better known as one of Britain’s most prolific playwrights, creating 30 performed works in 15 years.
He directed 75 stage productions, founded four theatre companies and also ran the Swan Theatre in Worcester.
In 1986 Mr Masefield developed a severe form of ME, which put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. This led to a new career as a campaigner for disabled people in the arts.
He is survived by his wife Caroline, who he married in 2002, daughter Abigail, from a previous marriage, and three grandchildren, Ami, Amba and Amaaya.
