Good luck message to our Olympic heroes

Date published: 27 July 2012

COUNCIL chiefs have sent their best wishes to Oldhamers taking part in the Olympics and Paralympics.

Among those set to shine is former Hulme Grammar School pupil Nicola White — a member of the Great Britain Hockey team tipped to finish on the podium.

Swimmer Jessica Lloyd has already spoken of her pride at being chosen to represent her country on home turf and will join the rest of the relay team in taking on the cream of the crop after dazzling in the 100 metres open age freestyle at the British Championships. The Saddleworth teenager warmed up for the Games in fine style by claiming two medals in the recent British Gas ASA National Championships.

Another taking the plunge is Royton’s Joe O’Regan (20) who has clinched a place in the Waterpolo squad. And Paralympian Ben Proctor is also set to take to the pool on September 2 in the S14 200m Freestyle event.

Oldham Council leader Councillor Jim McMahon said: “The Olympics is the biggest sporting event this country has hosted since the World Cup in 1966 and I am delighted Oldham athletes have been chosen to represent Team GB.

“I and every resident wish them the very best and we all have our fingers crossed that they achieve the personal goals and high standards they will no doubt have set themselves. Oldham has a rich sporting legacy and it will be exciting to hopefully see this added to over the coming weeks.”
