‘This was a campaign of rapes - judge

A PREDATOR who abused an Asian girl in a “campaign of rape” has been jailed for 22 years.

Shabir Ahmed (59), formerly of Windsor Road, Coppice, is already serving 19 years for leading the child sex exploitation ring in which young white girls in Oldham and Rochdale were systematically abused in 2008.

The new prison term — for his conviction on 30 specimen counts of rape — will run concurrently with the sentence he received in May.

Sentencing him at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar was forced to remove Ahmed from the dock before he passed sentence as he was persistently interrupted by the defendant.

The judge said: “You are still in denial. This was a campaign of rapes starting when the victim would not have understood what was happening to her. There are no extenuating circumstances.”

In evidence the victim blasted Ahmed as a “psychopath”.

Even today she believes her future is bleak: she suffers confidence issues and has nightmares about her past abuse, which went on for more than a decade.

A pre–sentence report considered Ahmed posed a “very high risk” of causing serious harm to children.

Simon Nichol, defending, suggested his client stopped his behaviouir more than 10 years ago, long before the police were alerted to it — but admitted there had been serious sex offences since, which related to “entirely different circumstances.”

The jury returned a verdict of guilty on 30 counts in under three hours.

Afterwards Detective Chief Supt Mary Doyle, head of GMP Public Protection Division, said of Ahmed’s victim: “This girl has shown phenomenal bravery.”
