CHADDERTON’s Grade II listed war memorial at Chadderton Town Hall has been refurbished with money from the Chadderton District Partnership.
The restoration work included cleaning the memorial’s bronze statue of a soldier. The granite plinth was cleaned and repointed and new words “and in all subsequent conflicts” added to the carving to commemorate subsequent wars as well as World War I, for which it was originally erected.
The bronze and granite monument was unveiled in October 1921, at a cost of £2,000.
Last year the council pledged £50,000 to ensure the borough’s 16 memorials are upgraded.
Other works include recutting and reblacking of inscriptions at Lees, Waterhead, Greenacres, Austerlands and St Chad’s in Uppermill. The Angel figurine at Failsworth is also to be regilded and the paving around the Oldham war memorial repointed.
Improved access steps to the memorial site at Pots and Pans is also included in the scheme, with improvements proposed at Saddleworth and Bardsley.
