Olympics experience ‘brilliant’ for Martin

A SOLDIER from Oldham may not have been a medal hero at the Olympics - but he played a vital role at the London Games.

Corporal Martin Brindley, of 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers), worked as part of the venue security team at Earls Court during the Olympic volleyball competition.

The Territorial Army soldier was one of 18,200 involved in the security effort.

Operations ran smoothly, according to Cpl Brindley (50), who discovered a liking for the unfamiliar sport during his fortnight on duty.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved in the Olympics and I volunteered as soon as possible. The experience has been brilliant, mostly because all the spectators have been friendly and appreciate the security work.

“I got to watch some of the volleyball and really enjoyed it. It’s a fast and physical sport and if I get my way we’ll be playing it back at the unit.”
