A sherry a day keeps old age away, says Hilda

A SHERRY a day is the key to a long and happy life, according to Hilda Jackson. And she should know — on Sunday she celebrates her 109th birthday!
The great grandmother, believed to be Lancashire’s oldest woman, lived independently until she was 102. She now lives at Werneth Lodge Care Home on Manchester Road, where staff and fellow residents will be holding a party for her.
Hilda, an avid Chronicle reader, was born in 1903, the year the Wright brothers made their first powered flight, and is now looking forward to receiving her 10th telegram from the Queen.
Senior carer Kelly Mellor said: “She’s very popular and still quite independent. She is very feisty and won’t do anything she doesn’t want to do.”
One of three sisters, Hilda was a telephonist at Platt Brothers Engineering during her working life..
IT’S party time for two more members of Oldham’s ton-up club this week.
George Longster celebrated his 101st birthday yesterday, and Jessie Green turns 102 tomorrow.
Born in Yorkshire, George, of St Thomas’s Court, Church Street, moved to Delph with his wife, Minnie, 51 years ago.
The eldest of six children, Jessie, who lives in Acorn Lodge care home, Failsworth, worked as a machinist in Cheetham Hill before she met and married Harry Green when she was 18.
The couple had three children and ran a chip shop in Wales for eight years until he died at the age of 50 and Jessie moved back to Greater Manchester.
Jessie is a great-great grandmother, her family spread across the world.
