This time nothing could stop the carnival parade

THE heavens opened yesterday for the People’s Carnival, but it was nothing compared with the deluge that forced organisers to cancel the event at the 11th hour in June.
Oldhamers who look forward to the annual weekend of family fun pulled on their wet-weather gear and turned out anyway to enjoy the culmination of the carnival in Alexandra Park.
The afternoon was packed with entertainment, from dancing competitions and donkey rides to fairground fun and the centre-stage giving local musicians the chance to perform in public.
The 2pm parade, which now takes place within the park rather than through the town centre, was put back an hour to give the weather time to clear up, and it turned out to be the right decision.
Carnival management member John Murray (19) said: “The whole weekend has been a massive success. Thousands of people turned out, many more than we expected.
John announced Metrolink as the first sponsor signed for next year — the carnival’s first regional sponsor.
The People’s Carnival kicked off in the town centre on Saturday, with lots of free entertainment throughout the day.
