Documentary explores Brady power trip

Date published: 21 August 2012

ALMOST half a century has passed since Ian Brady and Myra Hindley embarked on a killing spree that would shock the world.

Last night’s Channel 4 documentary, “Ian Brady: Endgames of a Psychopath” explored Brady’s desire for power and investigated the hold he still has on his victims’ families five decades after his crimes.

The programme featured interviews with psychiatrists who have worked with the prisoner over the years - most believing he has no remorse for what he did.

Jackie Powell - Brady’s advocate, at the centre of a storm at the weekend over revelations that Brady had given her a letter for Winnie Johnson to be opened on his death - said Brady has told her he knows exactly where the remains of Winnie’s son Keith are on Saddleworth Moor.

Some years ago Brady got police to take him to the moor to “help the search” for Keith’s remains, but failed to remember where the grave was. Psychologist Malcolm McCulloch told the programme he believes Brady knew exactly where the grave was and simply wanted to check it hadn’t been disturbed.

Winnie Johnson died at the weekend without knowing of the programme or the letter, or of the whereaouts of her son’s body.
