Second vandal raid on community allotment
Date published: 24 August 2012
Vandals have caused thousands of pounds of damage at a special allotment used by vulnerable people.
It was the second attack in a fortnight for the Wildbrook Community Allotments site in Fitton Hill — run by Oldham Council’s wellbeing service, Medlock Vale Children’s Centre and Village Housing for people with learning difficulties and mental-health problems.
The raiders struck on Saturday night after scaling a fence and breaking locks on a cabin. After destroying he cabin they released 11 chickens from their coop.
On Sunday a supervisor found all but one of the birds were dead and headless — though whether by the vandals or animals isn’t clear.
Other damage was done to haging baskets and gardens, and a cash box containing money, a mobile phone and refreshments was stolen.
Manager Gary Baynham said: “It’s been harrowing for the people who use the site. We’ve had to tell them why they can’t use the service for a while and it’s very upsetting for them.
The site was completely refurbished in May with improved wheelchair access, new planters and a redecorated cabin.
Information on the raiders can be passed to police on 101 or through Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
