HORROR ordeal . . . Val on the path where she fell
A BRAVE great-grandmother left unconscious in the middle of the road after falling over a section of broken pavement is urging Oldham Council to take action.
Val Pemberton (74) tripped on an uneven kerb outside her Shaw home, fell face-first and collapsed.
The former Shaw parish councillor almost lost an eye in the fall , which fractured her cheekbone, cracked a rib and caused severe bruising.
She lay unconscious in the middle of the road for some time before a young man came to her aid
The mother-of-three and grandmother-of-eight said: “Anything could have happened to me while I was lying there.”
She is now begging Oldham Council to fix the pavement.
The Princess Road resident said: “The road has been damaged by trucks who use it as a shortcut.
“A lot of trucks go past but it is a narrow road so they are forced to mount the kerb. Now the kerb is cracked and uneven.”
Val explained the walkway was last repaved 14 years ago when she was a parish councillor.
She wants the pavement to be repaired and a weight limit to prevent heavy trucks causing further damage.
It is thought Val, a former secretary for the Royal British Legion, drifted in and out of consciousness for some time before the mysterious hero came to her aid.
“They didn’t know if I’d fallen, been run over or mugged because there was such a lot of blood.
“He went and asked all my neighbours who I was and he stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. He was a true knight of the road.”
Now Val is hoping the Good Samaritan, thought to be in his 30s and driving a small blue van, will come forward so she can thank him.
“I don’t know who he was and I can’t even remember what he looked like.”
An Oldham Council spokesman said the matter will be investigated.
