HGVs still cut corners after speedy repairs

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER injured after falling over some uneven pavement has praised council bosses for their swift response.

Val Pemberton (74) was left unconscious in the middle of the road last Friday after tripping on the uneven kerb outside her Shaw home.

She fell face-first and lay unconscious in the middle of the road for some time.

After the Evening Chronicle highlighted her plight, Oldham Council quickly moved in to repair the broken stretch of Princess Road.

But within minutes of the job’s completion on Friday, heavy lorries were again using the road — and mounting the pavement on the opposite side, leading to fears that more damage will occur.

The former Shaw parish councillor, who almost lost her eye as she fractured her cheekbone, cracked a rib and was severely bruised, praised the workers.

She said: “I’m impressed at how quickly they came out. It was the very next day after the article went in the paper. The workmen have been working solidly on the road all day.”

The pavement and kerb are thought to have been left uneven by trucks which use the road as a shortcut.

Because the street is narrow, they are forced to mount the kerb.

Val added: “Now I want them to put a weight restriction on the road to stop the trucks coming up or down here at all.”
