Store’s red carpet for Rose and Alice
Date published: 31 August 2012
IT WAS “buy one, get one free” when two loyal Sainsbury’s customers celebrated their 100th birthdays at the store.
Rose Carpenter and Alice Rushton were guests at the Union Street supermarket yesterday for a party organised by store staff. Alice reached her milestone in July, and Rose joined her yesterday. The sprightly pair still enjoy shopping at the supermarket every week.
Mayor of Oldham Councillor Olwen Chadderton turned out to wish them both many happy returns, while shoppers joined in a chorus of Happy BirthdayTo You started by the store announcer!
Rose, who puts her long years down to teetotal living, said: “It’s been a really lovely day.”
Similarly, Alice, who enjoyed a week of parties when she turned 100 on July 19, was praised by store staff, who described her as “razor sharp”.
Sainsbury’s spokesman Keith Bearcroft, who presented the pair with flowers, said: “We’re honoured to be able to wish two loyal customers a very happy birthday.”
