Royal send-off for brigade’s baton

THE Olympic torch relay may be over but another baton is coming through Oldham — and taking a trip on Metrolink.

Members of the Boys’ Brigade will carry the historic baton containing a message from the Queen as part of its journey from Balmoral to London.

The relay is being held to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Queen, the brigade’s patron. The baton was first used by the brigade to send a message to her grandfather, King George V, on his diamond jubilee.

This time it will be carried through Scotland and Northern Ireland before arriving in Newcastle for its journey across England and Wales.

Members of the Halifax Battalion will take it down Uppermill High Street by kart on Saturday, before passing it to the Oldham Battalion at Saddleworth Museum at around 1.30pm. It will then travel by car to Mumps, and by tram to Media City in Salford.
