Proud to be back
Date published: 11 September 2012
TONIGHT we begin the search to find the people who go the extra mile for Oldham and its people with the launch of the 2012 Pride in Oldham awards.
Since they were first awarded in 2002 more than a 100 champions of the borough have taken the walk up the red carpet as winners. Hundreds more been honoured as finalists.
The search for this year’s crop of deserving individuals, groups and businesses starts later in the year than usual. Now the Games and the holiday season are behind us, we’re keen to receive your nominations for those local people who make a real effort to get things moving in Oldham — from club organisers and charity stalwarts to busy bees and community champions.
We are sure many unsung heroes in the borough deserve their own moment in the spotlight, and this year we are introducing two new categories.
One is “Love Where You Live” — an award to recognise those who have made a special effort under the council-inspired community project.
There will also be an “Oldham Ambassador” award for those who unceasingly promote Oldham to the rest of the country and beyond.
The other categories remain: Voluntary, Professional, Group, Business, Health Worker, Education Worker, Schools and Special Achievement.
Readers will be able to get involved by choosing the “Readers’ Choice” winner across all the categories.
An independent judging panel will assess all the nominations and draw up a shortlist of three in each category. They, and their guests, will be invited to the gala awards event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Oldham on February 8, 2013, when the winners will be revealed.
Chronicle Editor David Whaley said: “We look to honour people who do fantastic work around the borough — often in a voluntary capacity and for very little thanks.
“They are the very lifeblood of the local community and it is right that they too are given the recognition they deserve.”
