Burglaries spark increased patrols

POLICE in Saddleworth are stepping up patrols after a spate of break-ins on Monday.
Burglars attempted to enter four houses in Springhead and Grotton. One occupant was threatened with a screwdriver and had a laptop computer stolen.
The drama began at 12.45pm when a glass panel at the back of a house in Under Lane, Grotton, was smashed. The thieves were disturbed and fled.
Three hours later raiders failed to get into a house in Belmont Avenue, Springhead.
Forty minutes after that, the raiders broke into a house in Ivy Green Drive, Springhead. And at 5pm, burglars were again disturbed as they broke into a house in Belmont Avenue, Springhead.
Saddleworth residents are being urged to take part in a Home Watch recruitment drive.
Stalls are being set up today in the Square, Uppermill (10am-5pm) and on Friday at The Swan, Delph; Lees Library and Tesco, Greenfield (all 1- 7pm).
