Airport to pull plug on controversial scanners
Date published: 18 September 2012
MANCHESTER Airport will end its trial of “naked” body scanners next month - to make way for a new generation of privacy-friendly security.
The new machines automatically process full-body images without the need for oversight by security officers — which was what made the current machines objectionable to many passengers.
Five new automatic scanners - which point officers at potential risks using visual displays of human figures - will be installed across all three terminals from October 1 for a three month trial.
