A GRATEFUL mum is trying to track down the nurse who saved her son’s life when he started to choke on a sweet.

The mystery woman performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on 12-year-old Thomas McCartney when a gummy snake got stuck in his throat.

Thomas, who wants to be a doctor, was walking home from school when the drama unfolded on Chadderton Park Road, close to home.

Mum Kate — who works at North Manchester General Hospital - said: “He had bought a bag of sweets and put one in his mouth while he was walking up the road.

“He started choking and couldn’t breathe. This woman came running up, said she was a nurse and did the Heimlich manoeuvre on him. The sweet came flying out and she calmed him down and made sure he was OK. I could have lost him; I would really like to find her and say thanks.”

The experience has increased his desire to be a doctor: “I have wanted to be a doctor for a while but I want to be one even more after this. You help people every day and you could save someone’s life. The woman was really nice.”
