Laser boy targets police helicopter
Date published: 25 September 2012
A teenager who shone a laser in the eyes of a police helicopter pilot could have caused “very serious consequences”, Oldham magistrates heard on Friday.
The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, woke up in the early hours as the helicopter flew over his house and shone the laser pen out of his bedroom window into the sky.
The pilot saw a flashing green light and said the pen was shone at his craft several times.
The officer looked away and took evasive action before telling police on the ground which address was involved. The boy was later arrested and on Friday pleaded guilty to acting in a way likely to endanger the pilot.
John Wright, defending, said: “My client is remorseful for his actions and having had time to reflect, realises it was wrong. It could have had very serious consequences.”
The boy will be sentenced on October 12.
