Christmas tree scheme could face the axe

THE donation of Christmas trees to local businesses by Saddleworth Parish Council is under review.
Undecorated trees worth more than £1,000 were given to shops and local community groups last year.
Councillors last night disagreed on whether they should continue the scheme, which some believe is poor value.
Councillor Mike Buckley said: “This scheme is a waste of money and we shouldn’t be doing it. The majority of areas are doing their own fundraising for Christmas trees, for example Delph, and do a brilliant job of illuminating their villages.
“It makes the trees we provide pale into insignificance. Not everybody takes up the offer anyway. We can spend the money better elsewhere.”
The council’s finance committee will discuss the issue at its next meeting.
