RESPECT . . . as flags are lowered at the war memorial
YOUNG and old stood side by side to mark the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Veterans, civilians, cadets and shoppers took part at the annual service at Oldham War Memorial.
Standard bearers from ex-servicemen’s associations listened in silence as the Last Post rang out across Yorkshire Street.
There was also a parade through the town centre led by pipers in full regalia.
The battle was one of the decisive moments of the Second World War as Hitler tried to gain superiority over the RAF to invade Britain.
More than 500 airmen from Great Britain and the 19 overseas nations which fought alongside the RAF died during the Battle of Britain.
It was their bravery that prompted Churchill to say: “Never in the field of human conflic, was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Sunday’s event was organised by Oldham Royal Air Force Association.
