OLDHAM is to get a new £4.7million primary school to cope with an unprecedented rise in the number of families with young children.
It is expected to open in central Oldham in September 2014 or 2015. The search for a suitable site is underway.
The school will have three forms in each year.
A report by Chris Hill, Oldham’s assistant director of learning and achievement, said: “Most boroughs are experiencing an unprecedented increase in the number of families requiring primary school places.
“What is significant for Oldham is the number of families moving in to the borough in addition to an already rising trend of primary-age children.”
In May and June alone, 39 families arrived in the borough with school-age children. The families were predominantly from Pakistan and Romania. One had 11 children and the total added up to around 250 new arrivals.
THE former Chadderton Grammar School site is to be sold 82 years after it opened on Broadway.
The council has applied to dispose of the land, currently North Chadderton Lower School, as well as the former South Chadderton School site.
Both have been replaced by new schools.
