The funerals of murdered police officers Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone will take place next week at Manchester Cathedral.

The funeral of PC Hughes (23), from Diggle, will be on October 3 at 1pm, and the service for PC Bone (32) will take place at 10am the following morning.

The officers died after being called to a burglary on the Hattersley estate, in Tameside, on September 18.

Their relatives joined colleagues and the public for a vigil and minute’s silence yesterday.

Hundreds of people gathered near Abbey Gardens, Hattersley, where the silence was observed at 10.58am to mark a week since the attack.

Police officers standing nearby, some carrying candles, bowed their heads. Members of the public crowded under umbrellas to shelter from the relentless rain.

Addressing the crowd, Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said: “We have lost two members of our family and we feel that loss very, very deeply.”

Dale Cregan (29) has appeared in court accused of the murder of the officers.
