Grotton’s 24-hour black-out

AROUND 1,000 residents were left in the dark for more than 24 hours after another power cut hit Grotton.
Lights went out at lunchtime on Wednesday after an underground cable fault. Power was switched back on soon afterwards, but the daily surge in power use at 5pm caused an overload and second blackout.
Engineers worked through the night but the power was still off last night, after more than 24 hours.
Resident, Shaun Clayton, of Thornley Lane, said: “I’m sick of power cuts.
“We seem to have them all the time in Grotton. I phoned the electricity board and was told this was because of a fault in Ashton.
“I live in Grotton — nowhere near Ashton!”
Electricity North West confirmed around 1,000 residents were affected. A spokesman said three cables were damaged.
“This is the final blackout because we have found three cables that have been damaged and are digging up the street to fix it. This should be the end of the problems.”
The power was due to be switched back on this morning.
