Deaths of PCs marked at memorial
Date published: 01 October 2012
HOME Secretary Theresa May joined hundreds of people in York Minster to remember officers who have died on duty, including PCs Nicola Hughes, from Diggle, and Fiona Bone.
Dozens of chief constables, colleagues of all ranks and families of officers who have died attended the service to mark National Police Memorial Day.
The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy, said: “It does give it a special poignancy because it’s close after the deaths of Fiona and Nicola but the important thing today really is remembering all the officers who have given their lives during the year.
“I cannot tell you how much we have been uplifted by the public response, it has been quite extraordinary. It really does show the level of support for ordinary officers going about their day to day business.
The funerals of PCs Hughes (23) and Bone (32) will take place at Manchester Cathedral this Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were remembered as the Labour party conference got underway in Manchester. Delegates stood for a minute’s silence to remember the two officers who died on September 18.
No further action has been taken against a 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender following the deaths of PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone.
