Family’s tribute to businessman

Date published: 05 October 2012

AN Oldham businessman who brought dozens of jobs to the borough has died at the age of 82.

Vincent Hurley, former managing director of Hurley Moate Engineering, died on Monday at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice after a long battle with stomach cancer.

His son Andy said: “My dad brought a lot of jobs and money into Oldham. He contracted out to other businesses in the area so helped to keep a lot of other companies afloat.

“But he was also a kind, decent chap, who would have done anything for anyone.

“He raised money for charity and his family meant the world to him. We’re all so proud of everything he achieved.”

The father-of-two and grandfather-of-four, who lived in Tenerife in the years before his death, faced hard times while at the helm of Glodwick-based Hurley Moate, in the 1970s and 80s.

But he also led the fabrications and printing machinery company into business in 26 countries, winning two Queen’s Awards, for technological advances and export.

The company also sponsored the renamed Hurley Moate Dobcross Band to help them with uniform and musical instrument costs.

The company went into receivership in 1990 and the following year Mr Hurley joined local company Cobden Chadwick as business development manager. He gave his free time to several local charities — including Dr Kershaw’s.

His funeral will be at Oldham Crematorium tomorrow (11am). All friends are welcome.
