AN Oldham entrepreneur has scooped a major award for his business prowess.

Craig Dean (36), who heads Web Applications UK, was named North-West Entrepreneur of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.

Judges were impressed with the former Hulme Grammar pupil’s “dynamic leadership” of the software company and his ability to secure high-profile contracts.

The firm, in Hall Street, Oldham, develops customised reservations software and has invested heavily in giving its 80 staff the latest skills and personal development opportunities.

Web Applications UK can count blue-chip companies such as Wyndham Worldwide, the National Trust, the Hoseasons Group and The Camping and Caravan Club as clients.

Global expansion is now likely: the entrepreneur has established Web Applications Australia and is planning an office in Colorado later this year.

“The award is fantastic news, not just for me and the company but for Oldham as well,” said Craig, who lives in Chadderton. “The business is doing really well; Oldham is a great place for an entrepreneur. I’m proud to be based in Oldham. It’s not about dusty, crumbling mills anymore, it’s a beacon of business in the region.”

As one of six regional winners, Craig will compete for the national title with a chance to win the Outstanding Business Achievement award and £25,000 at London’s Guildhall on November 29.
