Officers from forces across the country volunteered to cover the shifts of Greater Manchester Police colleagues so they could attend the service.
Entry to the funeral was by invitation only and central Manchester was set to come to a standstill as members of the public paid their respects as the cortege passed through the heart of the city.
Members of the public were also expected to gather outside the cathedral to watch the service on video screens.
The shocking deaths prompted a huge outpouring of public support with condolences paid by the Queen and Prime Minister David Cameron.
Police chiefs said they have been overwhelmed and heartened by the support shown
