Alex Williams: posthumous award
A YOUNG volunteer who dedicated his life to helping others has been celebrated with a posthumous national award.
Alex Williams, who suffered a fatal stroke in August at the age of 18, has won the prestigious Third Sector Volunteer of the Year Award, for his work as a young ambassador for the Meningitis Trust.
Alex was left unable to walk after suffering meningitis when he was seven. He began volunteering at the trust a year later.
Trust’s chief executive Sue Davie, who collected the award on behalf of his family, said: “Everyone at the Meningitis Trust is thrilled to hear Alex has won this award — and never was an award more thoroughly deserved.
“His philosophy was that meningitis marked the start of a new and different life and his motto was ‘believe and achieve’. He was a truly inspirational young man and role model to all those who have experienced meningitis. We are proud and privileged to have known him.”
