OLDHAM Mountain Rescue Team has been helping the search for missing five-year-old April Jones.

Sixteen team members and sniffer dog Bob arrived in mid-Wales in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The team’s Denzil Broadhurst said: “They asked if we could help out; we always help other teams where we can. Some searching is better done by humans, but some is better done by sniffer dogs - and that’s why we’ve got Bob.”

The Oldham team joined 40 rescuers from across Manchester in Machynlleth, where April went missing last Monday.

Mr Broadhurst continued: “56 guys from the Manchester area have been helping provide additional manpower for the search. It’s obviously something we’re committed to doing.”

The mountain rescue teams stood down last night as the search operation switched emphasis.

Supt Ian John paid tribute to mountain rescue volunteers “who have worked themselves to a standstill in the search for April”.

Former lifeguard Mark Bridger (46), accused of abducting and killing April was to appear before Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court today charged with her murder.
