Teacher-training day to tackle class racism

OLDHAM National Union of Teachers has organised a conference to combat racism in the borough’s schools.
The union has forged an alliance with campaign group Show Racism the Red Card for the event, on November 21. They are hoping Premier League footballers - including Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and City’s Micah Richards - as well as Oldham Athletic and FC United players, will add their support.
The day follows a BBC investigation that claimed a rise of more than 40 per cent in racist incidents in schools, Oldham having one of the biggest increases.
Tony Harrison, Oldham NUT secretary said: “The number of recorded incidents is probably just the tip of the iceberg. We are determined to make sure Oldham teachers are among the best equipped in the country to deal with racist incidents when they arise.”
