A NATIONAL award is to be named in memory of Saddleworth police officer PC Nicola Hughes.
The 23 year old, who died on duty in Mottram last month with colleague Fiona Bone, will be remembered at the British Kyokushinkai Karate Championships tomorrow in Crawley, West Sussex — a martial art she loved.
A sword, donated to the highest-placed British competitor at the tournament, will be named after the fallen officer from Diggle.
Nicola was a green belt from a family of karate lovers. Chairman of the BKK Linda Keavney said: “The events of that day have been close to everyone’s heart, especially ourselves and we want to pay a fitting tribute to Nicola and her family.
“There are no words to express our horror and our feelings: and our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to all Nicola’s and Fiona’s family and friends.”
A memorial garden dedicated to Nicola and Fiona (32), from Sale, could be set-up outside Hyde Police Station, according to Tameside police’s chief supt Nick Adderley.
Mr Adderley said he is hoping to acquiring land in Mottram or Hattersley to build a large memorial garden — an “iconic site for the right reasons”.
Nicola joined Greater Manchester Police in 2009 and served in the Tameside division.
A MAN who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with offensive hand-written slurs after the killings of PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone, has been jailed.
Barry Thew (39) of Radcliffe, admitted displaying the words with the intention of causing alarm or distress.
At manchester Crown Court he was sentenced eight months in prison — four months for the offence, and four months for breaching the terms of a suspended jail term.
He was seen wearing the offensive T shirt in Radcliffe town centre.
