Oldham Planning Committee
CONTROVERSIAL plans to allow a disused quarry to be developed for 61 houses were last night approved in a move that angered local councillors and residents.

Oldham Planning Committee granted outline planning permission to develop on Springhead Quarry, Cooper Street, despite discussion that split opinions.

Saddleworth and Lees councillor Val Sedgwick spoke up against the plans, originally submitted in 2008.

She shared the concerns of residents regarding traffic and pointed out that local schools would be incapable of coping with an influx of youngsters moving to the area.

She added: “The many objections have been reduced to seven bland bullet points despite 47 letters of objection. Surely local people should have much more power to decide on the plans which affect their area?”

Planning Committee member Councillors John McCann and Councillor Roger Hindle also objected to the plans.

Details of the number and style of the houses, parking restrictions and access will be discussed at a later date.
