Cameron in tribute to fallen PCs

Date published: 18 October 2012

GREATER Manchester’s two police officers killed on duty were remembered in Parliament as it met for the first Prime Minister’s question time since the tragedy.

David Cameron led the praise for Saddleworth’s PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone, the brave officers lured to their death on what they thought was a routine burglary call.

He said: “I am sure the House will also wish to join me in paying tribute to PC Bone and PC Hughes — brutally murdered on September 18.

“The whole country has been deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of these two young, dedicated, exceptional officers. Our thoughts are with their families and with their colleagues at what must be a very, very difficult time.”

The sentiments were echoed by Labour leader Ed Miliband who added: “PC Bone and PC Hughes, remind us of the dangerous work that our police officers do day in, day out in the line of duty.”

The tributes came as Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd — Labour candidate to run in next month’s Police and Crime Commissioner election —called on Mr Cameron to guarantee there would be no more cuts to policing budgets.
