It’s a bloomin’ hat-trick
Date published: 26 October 2012
OLDHAM has been crowned the flower-power capital of the region by retaining the “Best City” award in this year’s North West in Bloom competition - for the third year running.
Judges at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre also handed Oldham’s latest Bloom and Grow 2012 entry their top rating of Gold Medal status.
The double honour caps an amazing year for the town: only two weeks ago Oldham was named ‘Best City’ in the national Britain in Bloom competition, beating Aberdeen, Norwich and Westminster.
Oldham also won silver-gilt status and a Pride of Place award to recognise the community’s involvement.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and devolved services, said: “This result is the icing on the cake in what has been a simply spectacular year for Bloom and Grow. I am incredibly proud and inspired by the hard work, passion and innovation that has gone into this campaign.”
Oldham qualifies as a city as entries are based on the size of the electoral roll.
