PROPOSALS to axe a vital Oldham, service could leave needy people “on the scrap heap”.
Fears were raised as it was revealed the Family Information Service (FIS), which helps families with healthcare, childcare and financial support, could be cut in Oldham Council’s attempt to save £31 million.
The authority is considering plans to make the department an online service.
Staff at FIS help parents and carers with a range of issues, including how to find registered affordable childcare and providing information on tax credits and maternity benefits. They also work in conjunction with other agencies.
A reader said: “What happens to the parent who has tried everywhere else to get help with their child, but has got nowhere?
“The last thing they want is to sit at a computer or email someone for help. They want to speak to a human being with a friendly voice, which is what they get at the moment. The needy people in Oldham are being left on the scrap heap.”
