Mum leads campaign against speeding cars

Reckless motorists are putting youngsters’ lives in danger, according to the residents of a Failsworth street.

Householders in Dean Street claim vehicles travel at up to 40mph — 10mph above the limit — despite the road being used for access to both Mather Street Primary School and Hardman Fold School.

April Donnelly, whose mother lives in the street and looks after her two-year-old daughter, is spearheading a campaign against the dangerous drivers.

She said: “Speeding has been a problem for a while. My daughter Bella goes to my mum’s while I’m at work so it is something I’m becoming more and more concerned about.

“It will only take one driver going too fast and a gate left open or a child running out into the road. They should be able to play without this threat hanging over us that something might happen.”

She has now joined forces with residents on the street to organise a petition to Oldham council calling for action.

They hope it will persuade the council to either install speed bumps or build an access road from Broadway straight to Hardman Fold School.
