Ace turnout for charity challenge

Date published: 09 November 2012

PARTICIPANTS of all ages and abilities ran, walked and wheeled to raise money for Oldham charity ACE Centre North.

For the second year, FC United held its Minithon Challenge in support of the Oldham charity which helps children, young people and adults with the most severe communication difficulties.

Almost 200 people completed the 5k course around Chorlton Meadows, before celebrating their achievement in the local Irish Club with food, entertainment, prizes and a raffle.

ACE funding development officer Rachel Thwaite said the charity was delighted with the day.

She said: “It was a fantastic turn-out. We want to say a huge thank-you to FC United for putting on a great show, and to all the volunteers and everyone taking part for making it such a success.”

Money raised will be used to help pay for specialist equipment and services for people with little or no speech and who are often unable to write because of their disability.

Rachel added: “If you’re familiar with Professor Stephen Hawking, you’ll have an idea of the type of technology we provide.

“Our speech and language therapists, specialist teachers and occupational therapists work with the technology to give people a voice, people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to express themselves.”
