Mission to get Oldham working

AS Britain fights its way through recession and mass unemployment, proud Oldhamer Richard Outram is doing his bit to keep Oldham afloat.

Richard set up the Oldham Work Club Network when he was made redundant from his project officer role at Oldham Council last year.

Fast forward 12 months and the network now has 12 thriving clubs with more planned for the future.

The clubs are run by volunteers who help job seekers develop a CV, search for work and hone their interview technique.

Richard, who is chair of the network and helps to run the Shaw club, now works at First Choice Homes but devotes 15 hours a week to help local job seekers.

Clubs
He said: “There are currently clubs in Chadderton, Failsworth, Fitton Hill, Lees, Limehurst, the town centre, Shaw, Sholver, Westwood and a virtual club in Royton.

“There is a club for 16 to 18-year-olds at Positive Steps in Union Street and a club for those with disabilities.

“I am planning future clubs in Alt, Holts and Saddleworth as well as specific clubs for graduates, executives and ex-offenders. I also want to set up a club targeted at those wanting to start their own business.

“I am developing a website so that people can access all the information they need and get the message out to as many people as possible.

“Ideally, there wouldn’t be a need for work clubs because everyone would have a job but sadly that is not the case so I want to do everything I can to help those looking for employment.”
