20-minute beating ordeal of pet dog
Date published: 12 November 2012
A MAN beat his dog so savagely that it was heard screaming in pain for 20 minutes.
Jermaine Golding, of Byland Avenue, Oldham, caused his Staffordshire bull terrier, Smudge, to scream in agony, as he inflicted injuries to its head and leg on February 13, this year.
Concerned neighbours said they heard the incident, after the dog failed to go to the toilet outside.
Golding (31) appeared before Oldham magistrates on Friday, where he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to his pet.
The court heard that Smudge was found by an RSPCA officer with wounds to its head and hind leg.
One of the cuts was so deep the vet could see the bone underneath.
Mark Harper, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, told the court that when the neighbours tried to intervene, Golding told them “if I want to beat it, I will beat it and if I want to kill it, I will kill it”.
The black and white dog was rescued by the RSPCA, who took it to a vets for treatment.
It was given antibiotics and painkillers and has since been housed by the charity.
Sonya O’Brien, defending, told the court that Golding had suffered a difficult childhood without proper parental role models. He was also struggling because the dog defecated inside the house.
She said: “He does wish that his dog is rehomed into a loving and caring family and never experiences such treatment again.”
Golding was remanded on unconditional bail until tomorrow when he will be sentenced following the preparation of a probation report.
