‘Asda FM’ breaks two-minute silence
Date published: 13 November 2012
SHOPPERS at an Asda store were left feeling very short-changed on Remembrance Sunday.
Disgusted readers who contacted the Chronicle, claim loud pop music broke the two-minute silence at the Asda Living store, Elk Mill, as customers and staff stood to pay their respects.
Customer Carolyn Rees, whose husband David spent 16 years in the Army stationed in Northern Ireland, said it was both shocking and disrespectful.
“Everyone was stood there observing the silence when this loud music started blaring out from the first floor,” said Carolyn (56). “I and many other shoppers were appalled at this and just kept looking at each other expecting it to be switched off but it wasn’t, it just carried on with everyone still standing there trying to observe the silence.”
A spokesman for Asda said: “Every year we ask our stores to observe the two-minute silence out of respect for the fallen.
“However, it would appear a handful of shops had a short musical interruption over the Asda FM radio station due to a technical error.
“We wholeheartedly apologise to customers in any of those stores.”
