Police go extra mile for fallen colleagues

A FALLEN Heroes bike ride in memory of murdered police officers Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone has raised £6,000 for charity.

A total of 80 serving and retired police officers and staff from the Hillingdon Division of the Metropolitan Police undertook the four-day, 200-mile ride from Westminster Cathedral to the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) headquarters.

Officers and staff from GMP joined the cyclists on their final day, from Buxton Police Station, supporting the feat which raised money for the North-West Police Benevolent Fund.

The fund helps the families of injured and fallen officers — like Diggle’s PC Hughes and PC Bone, who both died when they answered a bogus burglary call in Hattersley in September.

Speaking on behalf of PC Hughes’s family, Bryn Hughes said: “To see such overwhelming support from police service staff from every part of the country has been humbling to say the least, Nicola was proud to serve alongside such people and would have been immensely touched at the level of support offered to us, her family, at this sad and tragic time.”
