It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

A BUMPER 10,000 crowd packed into Oldham town centre last night for a spectacular Christmas lights switch on.

Oldham’s Olympic hockey bronze medallist Nicola White teamed up with CBeebies star Rastamouse and Oldham Mayor, Councillor Olwen Chadderton, as the trio pushed the button to launch the festive countdown.

Santa Claus made an appearance as he arrived on an open-top bus with a raft of other colourful characters to match the festive patterns which were projected on to Oldham Parish Church and the old town hall. A fireworks display closed the ceremony to the delight of the crowd who also watched the action on large screens.

Former Hulme Grammar School pupil Nicola White (24), who will open Oldham’s new BHS store on Thursday, said: “It’s fantastic to be here in my home town. It is great to see so many people celebrating.”

Councillor Chadderton said she would be doing her Christmas shopping in Oldham.

“We have got to support our borough because it is such a wonderful place to live,” she added.

The lights will be illuminated daily from 3pm. A nativity scene can be found on Albion Street.
