LEONARD and Mary Foster are the first couple to tie the knot at Failsworth Town Hall.
The couple married on Friday at the Oldham Road venue which recently underwent a £2.2 million refurbishment and is now licensed for civil weddings.
The town hall, originally built in 1880, now boasts a modern glass extension, in which the ceremonies are held, which overlooks Rochdale Canal.
Following the ceremony, Leonard (76) said: “It’s absolutely fabulous with the great plate glass window looking out over the canal basin.
“I would recommend it to anybody — I can’t understand why it’s not better used.
“We were going to get married at Manchester Register Office but thought that parking would be a problem.
“We looked on line for somewhere else and found Failsworth Town Hall. We didn’t know until later that we were the first to get married there.”
