Time to bring library yobs to book

Date published: 23 November 2012

YOUTHS are making life a misery for residents who want to use Shaw’s library and Tesco.

One resident described how she had seen a yob get off his bike, run into Tesco and steal a sandwich while others described youths running riot in the library.

“They’ve broken shelves and damaged a door,” she added.

“People are complaining and making reports but I’m not sure anything is being done about it.”

Insp Kenworthy said he had been given a blank refusal by Tesco despite talking to them a number of times about getting security staff.

“There’s no plans to increase security but they realise we can’t be there all the time,” he said.

He explained that PCSOs who had tried to engage with the youths, had been abused and the gang leaders needed to be removed.

Royton and Shaw neighbourhood team had put a patrol plan in place to address the issues.

Councillor Steve Bashforth suggested that the new youth and anti-social behaviour sub-group look at the “very serious problem.”

Councillor Howard Sykes said the youths were making life a misery for residents — but especially older people — and that he was well up for “naming and shaming” troublemakers.
